At university, we encourage you to take on new challenges and broaden your horizons.

Specialization

Cultural anthropology, Southeast Asian regional studies (mainly Thailand), material culture studies

Research Contents

My specialty is cultural anthropology, and I am researching the relationship between objects and people in Southeast Asia, particularly northeastern Thailand. Specifically, I am dealing with a wide range of topics, including the social relationship between modern pottery and artisans, turning artifacts from archaeological sites into antiques, and community museums.
I am also working on a project to digitally archive the materials held at the Yokota Museum, which holds material culture materials from mainland Southeast Asia, and to conduct reminiscence workshops at community museums in Thailand and Taiwan.

About the seminar:Learn about your own culture through other cultures

In the seminar, we will read introductory books and research papers on cultural anthropology together, take up examples of cultures and societies around the world, and aim to acquire a perspective that allows us to reflect on our own culture. We will also learn about fieldwork methodology, which is the main research method in cultural anthropology. I feel that the appeal of cultural anthropology is that fieldwork can shed light on the lives and small activities of people that would normally be overlooked. I hope that you will experience the true joy of cultural anthropology.
