In the first year, students build up a foundation in Japanese culture, society and history, from the second year, they study foreign culture, society and history in the three ‘cultural courses’ (Asia, America and Europe). Junior students join specialized seminars to deepen their studies. from the fourth year, Senior students continue to study in their specialized seminar to deepen their knowledge.
The seminars at the Faculty of Comparative Culture are a unique university class format where students learn ‘as you are’, with an emphasis on ‘as you are’: first-year students take Introduction to Comparative Culture, a basic seminar. Sophomore students study comparative cultural theories in small-grouped classes. The third-year Comparative Culture Seminars and fourth-year Seminars are small-grouped seminars of around 10 students.
From a comparative perspective, the course considers the nature of multicultural societies, including culture, literature and history, as well as arts studies and feminist and gender studies in the third and fourth year, students deepen their studies by belonging to one of 20 diverse seminars. In addition, special lectures by a variety of invited lecturers are offered.
The Faculty of Comparative Culture offers a wide range of study abroad programs. There are long-term study abroad programs organized by the Faculty of Comparative Culture, as well as the Faculty's own ‘Cultural Studies Abroad Program.’ There are also programs organized by the International Center for all faculties. Students meet the local people, visit historical and cultural heritages, experience culinary culture and gain a multi-dimensional understanding of the local culture.
The Career Development Programs, which students can participate in from their first year, and the Otsuma MANAGEMENT Academy provide career support from enrolment to graduation. Graduates of the Faculty of Comparative Culture have fulfilled their dreams in a variety of professional fields.
